Augmented Working
Re-thinking the 'what' and 'how'
As self-learning technologies grow more capable, they also grow more unpredictable, and even their own creators can't always anticipate how they'll behave. Our Augmented Working researchers investigate how people and machines can partner safely and productively despite this uncertainty. The research explores how technology can extend human cognition and creativity, and how managers, designers, and policymakers can shape human-machine interactions to boost performance and job satisfaction while managing risk, control, and accountability.

Key Research Sub-Theme
This Stream focuses on:
1A. Augmenting Human Cognition
Investigating how humans and machines share complex tasks, such as one operator overseeing a swarm of drones, without eroding the human skills needed to catch AI's mistakes.
Dr. Tim Ballard
1B. Augmenting Human
Creativity
Exploring how human and machine collaboration can produce more original thinking than either working alone, from search-and-rescue planning to product design.
Professor Toby Walsh
1C. Management & Organisational Context
Tracking how workplace culture and leadership decisions shape the rollout of digital systems, and how that shapes worker productivity, safety, and wellbeing.
Professor Maureen Dollard
1D. Design Principles
Building evidence-based guidelines to help designers create technology interfaces that support safe, seamless collaboration between people and machines.
Professor Frank Vetere
1E. Developing Standards for Control & Accountability
Answering the urgent question of who is in control, and who is responsible, as machines take on more autonomous decision-making in the workplace.
Professor Jeannine Paterson
